Lower Your Energy Bills Series: Hot Water

Today's entry in our Lower Your Energy Bills Series focuses on hot water.  There are a number of simple things you can do to help reduce your energy bills by reducing the amount of hot water you use.

Turn It Down: Check to see what temperature your water heater is set at.  Consider lowering it to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.  This can save as much as 10% on water heating costs compared to a temperature setting of 140 degrees.  And, 120 degrees should still be plenty hot for all your showering and washing needs.

Turn It Off: Consider turning off your water heater when you don't need it.  This might mean turning it off before you go to bed at night, or before you leave for work (or golf) during the day.  If you worry about not having hot water because you'll forget to turn it back on, consider installing a timer.  When going out of town for an extended period of time, be sure to turn the hot water heater off completely.

Clothes Don't Need It: Try to wash your clothes on a cooler water setting.  Most of the time clothing doesn't need to be washed in hot water to get cleaned.

Use The Right Handle: When doing things like brushing your teeth or getting a drink of water, be sure to use the right faucet handle.  You don't need hot water for these tasks.  Turning on the hot water, even for a second, causes cold water to enter the water heater tank.

Fix The Drip: If you have a leaky faucet, especially one with a single handle, fix it.  Not only does this help conserve water, but it will allow hot water to stay in the tank where you want it.

Maintain Your Water Heater: Like any machine, your water heater needs maintenance now and then.  Flush the tank about every 6 months, and check for leaks while you are at it.  Check and replace the anode rod every 1-3 years.  Also, check the water pressure and make sure it's within the range recommended by the manufacturer.  A well maintained water heater not only works more efficiently, but it also extends the number of years of use you'll get out of it before it needs to be replaced.

Reduce Your Usage:  Don't run the hot water constantly while shaving.  Take more showers instead of baths.  Wash dishes by hand instead of the dishwasher. The less hot water you use, the less you spend to heat it.

Any and all of these small steps will help you reduce the energy costs associated with heating water in your home.  Find the ones that work with your lifestyle, and enjoy the savings!

SavingStar: Coupons Without Clipping

Using coupons is a great way to save money on groceries.  But many people don't like having to clip the coupons, and often time forget to bring the coupon to the store.  But with SavingStar, you can enjoy coupon savings with no clipping and no forgetting!

Here in The Villages, you can enjoy SavingStar coupons by connecting your store loyalty cards from CVS, Sweetbay, and Winn Dixie.  To start saving, click here to join:

SavingStar.com saves you money on groceries. 100% digital eCoupons

To our Grocery Delivery customers: We can keep your loyalty cards on file for you.  We'll use your loyalty card for your delivery orders from these stores, allowing you to enjoy coupon savings from SavingStar!

Stick It (To Save Money)!

The humble stain stick.  It's pretty obvious that removing stains from your clothing saves money.  Getting rid of the stain means you don't have to buy a new shirt or dress, etc.

But using a stain stick can also help you save money by allowing you to wait until you have a full load before washing your stained clothing.  As the label on this stain stick says, "Treat Now, Wash Later."  Instead of washing one article of clothing when you get a stain, simply apply the stain stick and then throw the clothing in the hamper until you are ready to wash a full load.

Whether you wash or or two items, or a whole load of laundry, the water and power used to run the washer and dryer are the same.  By doing a full load, you get more for the money you spend on water and power.  Plus, you'll do fewer loads, using less water and power each month.  And fewer loads means less time washing and more time relaxing!

Grow Your Own / Verti-Gro

In the past, we've mentioned that one way to save money on fresh produce is to grow your own.  Options for this run anywhere from a full fruit and vegetable garden in your back yard to just a small table-top herb garden.

In The Villages, we have a neighbor located just a few miles north in Summerfield, off of US 27/441, called Verti-Gro.  Verti-Gro is a hydroponic growing system that people with little or no garden space can use to grow their own fruits, vegetables and herbs.  Their system uses vertically stacked insulated pots along with specially formulated hydroponic fertilizers and nutrients to grow beautiful produce.

A ride up to Verti-Gro makes a nice little (free!) day trip from The Villages.  Seeing all of the plants they have growing in a relatively small space is most impressive.  Even if you don't have an interest in growing your own produce, a trip to Verti-Gro is worth the short drive.  The people working there are so friendly, and you'll often come home with a free tomato or other Verti-Grown piece of produce!  Before heading up to Verti-Gro, give them a call to check their visiting hours.  Their phone number is (352) 347-9888.

eReaders Can Save Time & Money

If you enjoy a good book, and you also like to save money, you might consider investing in an eReader.  eReaders like Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Noble's Nook, and even full fledged tablets like the iPad have become very popular.  In our travels around The Villages, we often see people enjoying a good book on their eReader.  They are a convenient way to keep your current read by your side no matter what you are doing.

So, how can an eReader save you money?  If you are an avid book buyer, investing in an eReading device will very quickly pay for itself.  Most of the time, new releases and best sellers are less expensive in ebook format than their hardcover versions.  For example, this week's New York Times Best Seller The Hit by David Balducci sells for $15.49 in hardcover on Amazon, while the Kindle ebook version of the same book sells for just $8.99.  That's a savings of over 40%!  With this kind of savings, an investment in an eReader can pay for itself very quickly.

In addition to the savings off current best sellers, you can find thousands of ebooks for FREE!  A quick search of Amazon.com (Kindle eReader), BN.com (Nook eReader), and iBooks (iPad) will reveal a huge selection of free books.  These free selections change regularly.  A service called BoobBub will send you a daily email listing free and inexpensive ebooks based on your reading preferences.  Best of all, there is no cost for this service!

eReaders are also becoming an electronic alternative, and extension, for public libraries.  For an annual fee of $79, Amazon Prime membership includes access to a lending library where you can read many recent releases for free.  This is just one benefit of membership.  Amazon Prime members also get FREE two day shipping on anything purchased on Amazon.com, as well as access to thousands of movies and TV shows which can be streamed to your eReader, tablet, computer and other device at no charge!  Also, many public libraries are offering access to ebooks for their members to borrow on their eReading devices, which offers another way to enjoy books at no cost to you.

In addition to the potential money savings from free and cheap ebooks, eReaders offer a world of convenience.  Instead of trudging to the book store to find a new book, you can simply go online and get instant access to any book of your choice.  The world is literally at your fingertips.  Many devices can also double as a tablet computer, video streaming device, and even a possible substitute for a laptop.

For anyone with difficulty reading small print, eReaders offer several nice features.  Most eReaders allow you to change the font size of any book.  With an eReading device, you are no longer limited to reading just the books available in large print format.  Many eReaders also offer the option of having the device read to you; essentially an audio book feature.  Both of these features make eReaders perfect for anyone that has given up on reading due to reduced vision.

Even if you don't want to invest in an eReading device, you can still take advantage of many of the benefits of ebooks.  If you have a tablet or smartphone, you can download free Apps to read Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble Nook ebooks.  Also, most ebooks can be read right from your computer -- just buy the book (or download the free book), and enjoy.

For more information, or to order Amazon's Kindle device, please click the Amazon ad at the bottom of this page.  You can even find the Nook, iPad, and other eReading devices on Amazon.

Florida Resident Deals: Another Perk of Living in The Villages

There are so many things to love about life in The Villages.  One of those perks that often goes overlooked is taking advantage of your Florida residency status.  In The Villages, we live just an hour away from attractions that bring in visitors from literally all over the world.  As a Florida resident, you have the opportunity to enjoy these attractions frequently, and with less costs, than most people throughout the world!

SeaWorld is located just about an hour's drive from The Villages in Orlando.  Florida residents can take advantage of many great deals, including the Fun Card (pay for one day's admission, get in free the rest of the year) or an Annual Pass.  SeaWorld even offers monthly payment plans to stretch the cost of your passes out over the life of the pass.  Most of these deals offer free parking for members, as well as discounted ticket prices for when you want to take your out-of-town guests.

Of note is SeaWorld's newest attraction, opening May 24th: Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin.
If you are a fan of the coolest birds in the world, you wont want to miss this one!

Busch Gardens is SeaWorld's sister park located in Tampa (just over an hour from The Villages).  Like SeaWorld, Bush Gardens offers the Fun Card or Annual Pass options.  Because these parks are owned by the same company, you might also consider a pass that allows entry into both SeaWorld and Busch Gardens for one low price.

LegoLand is one of the newest theme parks in Florida.  Located in Winter Haven, this park is about 90+ minutes from The Villages.  LegoLand is geared toward younger children, making it a great choice when the grandkids are visiting.  Florida residents save $30 on an Annual Pass!  LegoLand is located on the property of the old Cypress Gardens attraction.  LegoLand has kept much of the beautiful gardens intact, offering a nice alternative to the kiddie attractions in the park.

Closer to home in Ocala, you'll find Silver Springs, "Nature's Theme Park."  Just 30 minutes from The Villages, Silver Springs offers wildlife exhibits, botanical gardens, and rides.  Silver Springs is currently offering Florida residents 50% off admission!

No blog post about Florida attractions would be complete without mentioning Walt Disney World.  Walt Disney World is only about an hour from The Villages.  There you will find 4 distinct theme parks; The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom.  There are also 2 water parks on the Disney property.  And, you can also enjoy Downtown Disney and Disney's Boardwalk -- shopping, dining and entertainment areas that can be enjoyed with no admission fee!  Florida residents have many options for savings when it comes to the Disney parks, from Annual Passes to the 3-Day Discover Disney Ticket for just $119!

Whichever attractions you choose, be sure to take advantage of the savings offered from being a Florida resident.  In addition to the admission cost savings offered from various passes, many offer added perks like free parking, discounted food inside the park, and even discounted ticket prices for your guests!

Also, by owning an annual pass, you don't have to feel guilty for leaving the park after just a few hours if you get tired.  You will be able to come back again tomorrow, next week, or next month, depending on your pass, to enjoy the parts of the park you missed.

For those of you that enjoy Village Delivery's grocery service, feel free to ask us to pick up Fun Passes for SeaWorld, Busch Gardens or single-day admission to LegoLand as part of your grocery order from Publix.

Let The Rain Save You Money On Your Water Bill

It's a wet night in The Villages, and it looks like we will have rain over the next several days.  As we start to move into the rainy season, be sure you have your lawn irrigation set properly to reflect the increase in precipitation.

With enough rain each day, many people will be able to turn off their sprinkler system altogether.  Even if you have a rain gauge connected to your automatic irrigation system check to see if it's actually turning off your system when you don't need it.  Most systems work well enough to not turn on the system while it's raining, but many will allow the system to come on shortly after it rains.  The best thing to do when we get lots of rain is to move your system to the off position.  This will ensure that you are not wasting water on your lawn when it doesn't need it.

Also, if you haven't checked in a while, make sure your sprinkler heads aren't broken.  Nothing runs up your water bill faster than water shooting out of a broken sprinkler head.

While Village Delivery doesn't do lawn or irrigation work, we can connect you with our network of lawn care professionals.  Feel free to call or email us, and we'll help you find a reputable company to that can help you with any lawn or irrigation needs you have.
