Saving On Pet Food

For many of us, life in The Villages just wouldn't be the same without our pets.  They are our loyal companions and friends.  They love us, and we want to show our love for them by giving them the very best.  But our furry friends needs can often get expensive!  Here are some things you can do to save some money, while still providing the love and care your pets need:

It's awfully tempting to buy the fancy pet foods we see in the Big Box Pet Stores or the veterinarian's office.  We want our furry friends to eat well, after all. However, many experts suggest that a quality name brand pet food, high in protein and low in fillers, is all most pets need.  Talk to your veterinarian, and ask him/her to recommend a food that is right for your pet.  If your vet suggests a brand sold in his/her office, ask if there is a less expensive option available.  For most pets that don't have a special dietary need, you'll be able to find a food sold at the grocery store that provides all the nutrition needed, and at a fraction of the price. If you do start your pet on a new food, introduce it gradually to help your pet adjust to the change in diet.

Buying pet food in bulk also saves money.  Typically larger containers of pet food cost less on a per unit basis.  You'll pay more up front, but save money in the long run.  And, you wont need to buy pet food as often if you buy in larger quantities.  If lifting heavy bags of dog or cat food is difficult for you, Village Delivery can assist by delivering your pet food from the grocery store, the Big Box Pet Stores, or your veterinarian's office.

Also, be sure that you are feeding your pet the right amount of food.  Approximately 35% of pets in the U.S. are overweight.  A major contributor to pet obesity is over-feeding.  Read the label on your pet's food and measure out the suggested amount based on your pet's size.  Using a measuring cup is a good way to prevent over-feeding.  By feeding the right amount of food, you're doing your pet a favor and saving money in the process.
